The manganese-PNP complex [B5670] is a powerful catalyst for hydrogen transfer reactions and is utilized in carbon-nitrogen and carbon-carbon bond formation reactions as well as reductions. B5670 catalyzes the reduction of aldehydes, ketones, and nitriles with hydrogen gas or alcohols to afford the desired alcohols and amines, respectively. B5670 can also catalyze the N-alkylation of primary amines with alcohols to convert them into secondary amines.
To assist the change oxidation state, or, in the case of the metals, to absorb other substances onto their surface and activate them in the process, TCI offers several transition metal catalysts which are widely used for introducing various functional groups:
The Swern oxidation is a commonly used synthetic method for the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to aldehydes and ketones, respectively. Swern oxidation is generally conducted by an in situ generated sulfur ylide, produced by the reaction of oxalyl chloride [O0082] with DMSO [D0798]. Swern oxidations have advantages over other oxidation methods in its mild reaction, greater functional group tolerance, and minimal waste.
